Early 19th century enamel vinaigrette ring, in 18k gold. Enamel links attached the vinaigrette basket to the enamel ring. The backset is decorated with a translucent red enameled guilloché layered with decorative floral designs and a tiny set ruby. When opened the basket reveals a removable pierced cover with an intricately engraved floral motif. Swiss enamel work. Circa 1820.
It was a common accessory with the elite classes of the time. A bit of perfume soaked cloth would be placed beneath the pierced panel and allow the wearer to open the locket and enjoy the scent or mask unpleasant odors in the environment.
