A bold early 19th-century citrine and diamond cluster ring. A mix of table-cut and rose-cut diamonds surround the center stone. The diamonds are set in silver, which is appropriate for the period. The remainder of the ring is in 15-18k gold. The center stone is a light lemon yellow citrine in a foil-backed setting. Setting foil behind gemstones was a common practice until the 1840’s. The foil adds a reflective backing to the stone. Sometimes jewelers would use tinted foils to enhance the color of gemstones. Rings from this period are more frequently small in scale. Likely, this was originally a gentleman’s ring. English in origin. Circa 1810.
